TESSA in Uganda
Shimoni teacher training college in Uganda

@OU_Education academics, Jane Cullen and Liz Chamberlain spent a week in March visiting TESSA colleagues at Kyambogo and Makerere universities to discuss the future direction of TESSA in Uganda.  Colleagues in Kampala have long championed TESSA both within their own institutions and more broadly through the Primary Teachers Colleges.  This most recent visit launched the TESSA Ambassadors project (http://www.tessafrica.net/news/ambassador-scheme) and the Small Grant Scheme (http://www.tessafrica.net/news/small-grant-scheme); TESSA Director, Kris Stutchbury, has already received strong applications for both initiatives.

Over the coming months, colleagues Henry Busulwa, Makerere University and Julian Bbuye, Uganda Management Institute, are exploring the possibility of hosting a workshop for secondary science teachers, building on the good work of the first TESSA forum held at Makerere University in 2014.  Anthony Muggaga, Deputy Principal, College of Education and External Affairs at Makerere is planning to use TESSA materials with student Humanities teachers.

At Kyambogo University, with the support of the Acting Vice-Chancellor/Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya; and Dean of the Faculty of Education, Associate Prof. Joyce Ayikoru Asimwe, project plans include hosting an induction workshop for teacher educators and integrating TESSA materials into the Kyambogo curriculum.  Looking further ahead, Kyambogo are planning the second TESSA forum in early 2018 which aims to include representatives of all the PTCs and NTCs.

All this exciting activity will be led by a new Kyambogo TESSA team, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, and including George Kasule, Doris Kaije and David Ngobi.

Jane and Liz are grateful to all Ugandan colleagues who welcomed them so warmly during their visit.
