Other institutions are revising existing programmes to include TESSA materials. The flexibility and open nature of the materials enables them to be adapted readily to different contexts. In Nigeria, the National Teachers’ Institute are planning to use TESSA approaches and materials extensively in their certificate programme with over 100,000 student teachers and in continuous professional development programmes with over 145,000 teachers Developed from localisation and materials integration workshops in 2006 and 2007, TESSA-enriched materials are currently being piloted across six states. In Ghana, the University of Education, Winneba, is using TESSA materials as the core content of a new mentor accredited programme. Using a variety of media, including video clips of TESSA activities, this programme aims to make a signification contribution to the quality and profile of mentoring in Ghanaian schools and therefore to extend and improve the local professional support available to new and student teachers. | University of Fort Hare, South Africa |
TESSA will provide a continuing professional development programme for teachers in the rural schools supported by the Nelson Mandela Institute for Education and Rural Development and teachers registered on the University of Fort Hare's In-Service Programmes. The materials will also be used in the campus based Teacher Education Programmes to show students how activity based learning can be incorporated into teaching strategies. The University of Fort Hare is also in discussion with the Provincial Department of Education on conceptualising how TESSA can support under-qualified teachers through the development of accredited continuing education programmes. In Rwanda the Ministry of Education has endorsed the use of TESSA materials in the National Retraining Programme for Primary School Teachers. This is a new retraining programme involving Primary Teacher Colleges and 200 primary schools, the latter will be acting as hubs for clusters of local schools. TESSA sections will be integrated in the new retraining materials for the programme with a particular focus on core classroom teaching skills, subject teaching skills, creativity and innovation. In 2008 / 9 12,000 teachers will enhance their skills through this programme.
